The Black Advisory Hub has been established to help build a diverse and inclusive community for all students and staff members at the University of Cambridge, as part of institutional action to improve Black students' outcomes at Cambridge.
Following our official launch in May 2021, a student article in Varsity further outlined the role and purpose of the Hub in the Cambridge context: The Black Advisory Hub: new, needed and never finished.
We are currently in 'Phase 2' of our development, working to extend the online resources and engage with staff development opportunities.
The range of activities include:
- an annual induction programme for incoming students (both undergraduate and postgraduate), incorporating an online introductory session before students arrive in Cambridge and an in-person meetup opportunity early in Michaelmas.
- an annual essay competition, the George Bridgetower Essay Prize
- a programme of social events for Black students, including afternoon teas and student/staff networking opportunities
- a suite of research projects, involving analysis of data relating to Black student experiences
- a Black postgraduate research symposium
- a seed funding grant to support Black student projects, activities or events
